Making a Difference
Claudine
Office Manager
Joined Recology in 1990
What I like about working at Recology:
I really enjoy the diversity of responsibilities of my job. Some days I might be attending a meeting with City or County staff, and other days I am crawling around on the floor changing Ethernet cables or assisting a customer in dumping their garbage outside our office! There are always new things to learn and new challenges.
Why my job is important:
In a smaller company such as ours, an office manager wears a lot of different hats. Being our Human Resources Coordinator is one of my major functions. I am also responsible for billing our accounts receivable, reporting to the City, overseeing our customer service department, and numerous other tasks. If our customer service representatives are short-handed, I have to jump in and answer phones or take payments at the counter. I back up our payroll clerk as well.
How Recology shows it appreciates its employees:
Our generous benefits make employees feel appreciated. At a time when many companies have cut back in this area, our benefits are even more incredible.
The employee owner meetings are another way that employees feel appreciated. Not many Chief Executive Officers take the time to visit every subsidiary and give every employee the opportunity to ask questions and learn about their company.
Having a direct line to the corporate office via the employee owner suggestion program makes employees feel their opinions are valued, as does our open door policy.
What it means to me to be an Employee Owner:
It's great to actually feel like you make a difference. Your actions can really make an impact in the success of the organization. Working more efficiently makes a difference. With each employee owner looking at different aspects and finding better ways of accomplishing tasks, the possibilities are endless!
My favorite hobby:
Spending time with my three grandsons! I also spend a lot of my free time volunteering, especially at the Boys & Girls Club. I enjoy oil painting, although I haven't had the time lately!

Protecting the Quarterback
Mario
General Manager
Joined Recology in 1978
What I do:
I always tell my team that we are the offensive lineman and our customers and city officials are the quarterback. Our job is to protect the quarterback. Service is the only thing we sell.
Why my job is important:
From the drivers and mechanics to the customer service representatives and managers, all of our roles are key to the success of our company.
How Recology shows it appreciates its employees:
By providing financial security for our families through competitive wages and benefits. Through job growth which provides opportunity for advancement. Through our annual employee ownership meetings which provide an opportunity for all of our employees to hear a state of the company address by our senior managers. And last but not least, our annual company picnic in which our families get a chance to meet one another and enjoy a day of fun.
Since I started working at Recology, I view the waste management industry differently:
Having "grown up" in the industry, I have fond memories of working on the paper trucks in the Financial District in San Francisco collecting paper rich loads which were then brought to West Coast Recycling. Because of that experience, recycling has always been second nature to me and my family. Recology prides itself on being pioneers in recycling and diversion which in turn will increase the longevity of our local landfills.
What it means to me to be an Employee Owner:
Having started my career at Recology Golden Gate, I was fortunate enough to be afforded the opportunity to work under the leadership of some of the original founders of our company. Today, as a 100% employee owned company, their work ethic and their commitment to customer service are still the driving force behind our company's mission.

Enabling Communication
Victor
Operations Supervisor
Joined Recology in 2004
What I like about working at Recology:
I like working at Recology because you learn something new every day. It is very family oriented, and everyone is always willing to give a helping hand.
Why my job is important:
I am the bridge between the drivers, office personnel and the customer. In order to give excellent customer service we rely heavily on communication between these groups of people.
Since I started working at Recology, I view the waste management industry differently:
I never realized how much garbage could be recycled. Now all my family and I are more aware of what goes in the garbage and what we can recycle.
What it means to me to be an Employee Owner:
I am aware of what goes on in our daily operations. If there is anything I can do to save our company time and money I make the suggestion to my operations manager. This is our company and we need to take care of it as we do our family.
My favorite hobby:
Coaching football.
